BITS Pilani was established in 1964 by G.D. Birla, a visionary industrialist and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. However, its roots trace back to 1929, when it began as a small school in Pilani, Rajasthan. Over the years, it evolved into a premier institution for higher education in engineering and sciences.

In 1964, with technical collaboration from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and support from the Ford Foundation, BITS Pilani was restructured into the modern university model it follows today. It is a private deemed university and operates autonomously, known for its emphasis on academic rigor, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
