Jamia Millia Islamia

Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) was established in 1920 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, during the Indian independence movement. It was later moved to Delhi in 1925. The university was founded by prominent nationalist leaders like Maulana Mehmud Hasan, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Zakir Husain (who later became the President of India), and others who wanted to create an institution that reflected Indian culture, values, and a spirit of self-reliance. In 1988, Jamia became a central university through an act of the Indian Parliament.
