Savitribai Phule Pune University was established on 10th February 1949 under the Poona University Act. Originally named the University of Poona, it was renamed in honour of Savitribai Phule, a pioneering social reformer and India’s first female teacher. The university was set up to cater to the needs of higher education in the region after India's independence.
