SASTRA was established in 1984 as Shanmugha College of Engineering, affiliated with Bharathidasan University. In 2001, it was granted the status of a Deemed-to-be University under the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is one of the earliest private institutions in India to gain prominence in engineering and science education.
