Symbiosis International (Deemed University), commonly referred to as SIU, was founded in 1971 by Dr. S.B. Mujumdar in Pune, Maharashtra. The university was established with a vision of promoting international understanding through quality education. The motto of Symbiosis is derived from the Sanskrit phrase "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam", meaning "The world is one family."

Initially started as a small international cultural center for foreign students in India, Symbiosis has grown into a multi-disciplinary, multi-campus university that attracts students from over 85 countries.
