  History of Acharya Nagarjuna University

Establishment: ANU traces its origins to 1967 when it began as a Post Graduate Centre of Andhra University. It was officially established as Nagarjuna University in August 1976, fulfilling the higher education aspirations of the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.  

Namesake: The university is named after Acharya Nagarjuna, a revered Buddhist philosopher and the founder of the Madhyamika Buddhism school. He is celebrated for his profound contributions to Buddhist philosophy and is often regarded as the "Second Buddha" by Buddhists in China, Japan, and Tibet.  

Inauguration: The university was inaugurated on September 11, 1976, by the then President of India, Sri Fakruddin Ali Ahmed.
