Christ University was founded in 1969 by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), a Catholic religious order known for its rich tradition in educational service. Originally established as Christ College, it gained distinction as one of the first institutions in India to be accredited by NAAC with an A grade in 1998.

In 2008, the institution was declared a Deemed to be University under the UGC Act by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The university is managed by the Christ (Deemed to be University) Trust, which operates under the CMI congregation.
