Established in 1911, KGMU was originally known as King George's Medical College. The foundation stone was laid in 1906 by King George V, then the Prince of Wales. Initially affiliated with the University of Lucknow, the institution gained autonomous university status in 2002, undergoing several name changes before reverting to its original name in 2012
