The University of Kashmir, established in 1948, is a prominent public state university located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It was formed following the bifurcation of the original Jammu and Kashmir University into two separate entities: the University of Kashmir in Srinagar and the University of Jammu in Jammu. ​

History: The university's main campus, situated in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar, spans 247 acres and is bordered by the picturesque Dal Lake to the east and Nigeen Lake to the west. Over the years, it has expanded to include satellite campuses in Anantnag (South Campus), Baramulla (North Campus), and Kupwara, aiming to make higher education more accessible across the Kashmir Valley. ​

Facilities: The University of Kashmir offers a range of facilities to support academic and extracurricular activities:​

  • Library: The Allama Iqbal Library houses over 600,000 books, including 415 rare manuscripts, serving the research and study needs of students and scholars.  
  • Hostels: Residential accommodations are available for students, with separate hostels for male and female students, including facilities like the Gani Kashmiri Hostel for research scholars and the Habba Khatoon Girls Hostel for female students. ​
  • Convocation Complex: A state-of-the-art auditorium complex with a seating capacity of 2,000, used for convocations and various events.  
  • Sports Facilities: The university provides facilities for indoor and outdoor sports, including cricket, football, volleyball, and a gymnasium, promoting physical well-being and sportsmanship among students.
  • IT and Research Centers: Equipped with modern computing resources and high-speed internet, the university supports advanced research across various disciplines.​

Reputation: The University of Kashmir is renowned for its academic excellence and research contributions. It has been accredited with an "A+" grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), reflecting its commitment to high educational standards. In national rankings, the university secured the 45th position among universities in India according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024. Internationally, it was ranked 451–500 in Asia in the QS World University Rankings for 2023, underscoring its growing global presence.​
