History of Gauhati University
Gauhati University, established on 26th January 1948, is the oldest university in Northeast India. It was founded with the vision of providing quality higher education to the people of Assam and the surrounding northeastern states.
The university was set up following the Gauhati University Act 1947, passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Initially, it started functioning from the Cotton College campus in Guwahati and later moved to its permanent campus at Jalukbari, which is spread over a lush green area of around 650 acres.
Over the decades, Gauhati University has played a pivotal role in the intellectual, cultural, and social development of Assam and the entire Northeast region.
