Established in 1889 by Rt. Rev. Dr. Adolphus Edwin Medlycott, the first Vicar Apostolic of Thrissur, St. Thomas College Thrissur is the oldest Catholic college in Kerala. Initially functioning as a lower secondary school, it was elevated to a second-grade college in 1919 and became a first-grade college in 1925 under the University of Madras.

St. Thomas College offers a range of facilities to support academic and extracurricular activities:

  • Academic Infrastructure: The campus includes multiple blocks such as the Administrative Block, Academic Block, Jubilee Block, and Centenary Campus. There are 102 well-equipped classrooms and 20 smart classrooms. The library provides access to over 6,000 e-journals and approximately 135,000 e-books through the INFLIBNET N-LIST program. ​
  • Sports and Recreation: Facilities include a 400-meter eight-lane track, football and cricket grounds, basketball and lawn tennis courts, a multi-purpose indoor stadium, and a well-equipped fitness center. ​
  • Technological Resources: All departments are Wi-Fi enabled, with classrooms equipped with projectors, LED televisions, and smart boards. The college utilizes licensed software packages such as SPSS and MATLAB. ​
  • Hostel Accommodation: Hostel facilities provide essential furniture and amenities. However, some students have noted that the meal quality is average. ​

St. Thomas College Thrissur has garnered recognition for its academic excellence:​

  • Autonomous Status: Granted in 2014, allowing for greater academic flexibility.​
  • NAAC Accreditation: Achieved an A++ grade with a CGPA of 3.70 in the fourth cycle of accreditation in October 2022.  
  • NIRF Ranking: Ranked 57th among colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024. ​

While the college is praised for its academic rigor and placement opportunities, some students have pointed out challenges such as the dispersed campus layout and strict regulations regarding campus access after hours.
